A Guide to Hand Washing Your Car
When we see other people’s cars we may feel a bit jealous if theirs is new or glistening in the sun. Many drivers forget how important washing your car is and so even cars two or three years old can really start to look poor if they haven’t been looked after properly. Many people will go to the car wash once in a while but generally lots of people don’t bother with washing their car, believing the rain should take care of it.
The rain is often what puts us off washing our car as the heavens seem to open just as we get out the bucket and sponge! The key to making sure our car stays in good condition and retains its value is often down to the maintenance and this doesn’t just mean the oil and water levels inside the car. Many people buy cars based on their appearance, so if you ever want to sell your car or just make it look appealing and to compete with the fresh off the forecourt models, you’ll need to wash your car regularly.
Washing by hand is the most careful way to clean your car as some car washs’ can be quite unforgiving and rough with your car. By doing the hard work with your sponge and warm water you won’t risk scratching the car. As tempting as it may be to blast the dirt on your car with a pressure washer this can actually do more harm than good as it can act like a sandblaster with the water using the dirt particles to scratch the paint.
Pressure washers are good at this time of year to clear wheel arches and other areas where salt can gather. Salt from gritted roads can speed up corrosion and you could end up with rust and holes developing. Your windshield and its wipers can gather dirt, sand and other small particles that can be scraped across your windows, when your wipers are on and this can leave little scratches, so be careful to get all the dirt in these areas too.
Many people think that a hand wash finishes at that, in fact you should get into the habit of polishing and waxing your car afterwards. Not only does this leave your car shining, but it can add a protective layer against any dirt and fading.
If your car has seen better days it may be worth looking to purchase a newer car. If you have had trouble getting car credit in the past, then there are affordable and individually tailored car finance options available that could help you out
