There are currently 130,000 naturally fueled vehicles on the U.S. roads only, including passenger cars and trucks, heavy-duty transit buses, school buses, and refuse haulers. As the cleanest burning fossil fuel, NGV offers emissions benefits for both passenger vehicles and heavy-duty vehicles. The 2004 Honda Civic GX, which runs on CNG is currently the cleanest passenger vehicle in terms of internal combustion engine. For heavy trucks and buses, the new model of a natural gas vehicle can reduce smog-forming pollution by about 25 percent compared to conventional diesel, while toxic soot pollution can be cut by 75 to 90 percent. Natural gas is also cost effective during refueling, as there are no evaporative emissions. Some owners of fuel-efficient vehicles have reported less instances of necessary maintenance to their cars. This is in stark contrast to the typical maintenance schedule for regular gasoline or diesel vehicles.

On the downside, the lower energy content of naturally occurring gas means that the driving range of NGVs is less than that of traditionally-fueled vehicles. Although extra storage tanks can increase range, payload capacity may be displaced by the additional weight. The primary impediments to the public proliferation of fuel-efficient vehicles include limited refueling infrastructure, high initial cost, and performance characteristics of the automobile. NGVs are more expensive initially than their gasoline powered counterparts despite the fact that it is cheaper to refuel and maintain. However, as the technology becomes more advanced, the cost of manufacturing these vehicles should drop, which may benefit consumers in the long run.

Over the past few years the gas prices have been rising but there did not seem to be a real need to use an alternative fuel car. I admit to complaining about the prices, but I did not start scrambling for ways to increase gas mileage or think I needed an alternative to gas car. When gas prices hit $4.00 a gallon the scrambling time arrived. Now, I’m not an economist but with the state of the economy I have to dig deep (pun intended) for a cheaper way to fuel my car. I make a modest living have a wife, two kids and drive roughly 40 miles round trip to my office.

I would love to ride a bike to work or walk but like I mentioned, it’s 40 miles. Public transportation would save money but the inconvenience of having to re-schedule my day for the stops that are made are not good since my work schedule can change on a whim. Buying a new hybrid car is not in the current budget. So that brings me to my newest discovery. Convert my car to a hybrid and use a water powered engine. Initially I laughed when my mechanic told me about this ‘water car’ concept.

To my surprise I found there have been many inventions in the past that explain how to use water as fuel can run your car. Water for fuel, I asked him? How can you run your car on water? He explained the following: “There’s a way to use electricity from the battery to split the water molecule and create a gas called Brown’s Gas. Another name for this reaction is called hydroxyl. It’s like making a hydrogen generator, the car actually runs smoother, produces less emissions and increases fuel efficiency. Only a quart of water is needed and apparently lasts for months.

He showed me a do-it-yourself guide that was about 90 pages and told me the materials needed cost about the price for a tank of gas. You can get everything for around $60 dollars from a hardware store. The diagrams and instructions seemed easy enough to follow but I would never hear the end of it from my wife if I messed up the car engine. I The conversion is 100% reversible if for some reason you need to switch back.

If this works then it would pay for itself in a month or so and the savings would continue for as long as the gas crisis. Some of the benefits I’ve heard are that you can increase gas mileage, increase your car’s fuel efficiency which of course saves you money at the gas station. The other great part about converting your engine is the government can’t put any extra tax on you for running your car on water. So there’s another way to save. If we don’t find ways to get better mpg the cost of everything will go up. Alternative fuel sources will have to be considered by everyone that’s concerned with a struggling economy.

Running a car on water may be the best option for you or your family at this time. There are still other ways to decrease soaring fuel costs. A water powered car may be the easiest way to go about saving over $1000 dollars a year.

Buying a used vehicle never seems to be an easy task. It is important to know what pitfalls to avoid so you do not buy someone else’s problems, most importantly one that has flood damage, which is often overlooked and something to seriously consider!

Consumers should not get confused as to why a vehicle is being sold used. This does not mean it’s a dud; it could be the simple fact that the previous owner is moving or inability to make necessary payments.

As the first generation of hybrid vehicles has made its rounds, many questions arise pertaining to buying a used one (yes, you can buy used!). Most people can only name two or three hybrids on the market, but in fact there are 14 new makes and models. Lauren saw this as a call to action to inform the public of their options and to guide their decisions.

There is not much more of a risk in buying a used hybrid compared to any other used car, as long as you do your homework. If you are comfortable with purchasing a non-hybrid car used, then you should feel comfortable buying a hybrid car used.”

Below, I’ve outlined key facts about hybrid vehicles and issues to consider the aid the process of buying used.

Inspection of a used Hybrid Car

I always recommends that people run a vehicle report, such as those offered by CarFax, on any used car they are planning on purchasing. Reports like these can give you valuable insight into how many different owners the hybrid car has had as well as alert you to any reported accidents involving the particular car.

If you are buying from a private party it is a good idea to have the hybrid car inspected by a dealer authorized for that make of hybrid. Tell the dealer you are considering buying this hybrid car and would like a pre-purchase inspection. It will cost little money for this inspection, but it will be money well spent.

If you are buying a hybrid from a car dealer, you can look for a certified pre-owned vehicle. If that isn’t possible you can still have the hybrid car inspected by anyone else of your choice.

Miles and Gas Mileage on a Used Hybrid Car

A low mileage used hybrid car is generally better than a high mileage used hybrid car. Less mileage tends to mean less wear and tear on the hybrid’s components. Plus, if you ever plan to resell the hybrid at some point you will have fewer miles on it for the next buyer. This does not mean that you need to be scared of a higher mileage hybrid car. There are plenty of hybrid cars that have exceeded 100,000 miles and more.

If you are buying from a private party, ask the owner what kind of gas mileage they typically get, and if possible see if they can back it up with receipts. Some hybrids, like the Honda Insight, have a gauge showing the cumulative gas mileage for the life of the vehicle, but don’t rely only on this; the gauge can be reset by the owner at any time.

Just because a hybrid car has high mileage on it, this does not mean you should be scared away. So far hybrid cars have been as reliable as their non-hybrid counterparts, and when there have been problems, manufacturers have set things right.

Batteries and Used Hybrid Cars

One of the biggest concerns relating to buying a used hybrid car is the hybrid battery. Each hybrid car manufacturer has different warranties for their hybrid components, varying from 8 year/ 80,000 miles for Honda products, to 8 year/100,000 miles for Toyota products. (This is a generalization and Lauren suggests checking with the manufacturer’s customer service for specifics.)

Currently replacing a hybrid battery after the warranty has expired could cost $2,000 – $3,000, although Lauren has yet to hear of someone actually paying for one in full on their own. The only hybrid batteries that have needed replacement out of warranty relate to certain 5-speed Honda hybrids and even then, hybrid owners have reported that Honda stepped forward and paid for some, if not all, of the bill.

Prices for hybrid batteries will come down as more hybrid cars are on the road, and as battery technology improves.

Used Hybrid Cars and Depreciation

Although hybrid cars have been fortunate to retain a higher percentage of their value due to tight supply, deprecation still occurs. The first year of depreciation is the highest, so you are conveniently missing this when you buy used.

Tax Credit When Buying a Used Hybrid Car

Used hybrid cars are not eligible for the hybrid car tax credit. The hybrid car tax credit only applies to the purchase of a new hybrid car.

Issues to Consider:

1. Oil and oil filter changes need to occur every 3,000-5,000 miles (keep to that schedule, never above 4,000 or 5,000 miles on any vehicle, no matter what the ads say). Synthetic oil is recommended and will extend the life to 7500 -10000 miles between oil changes.

2. Rotate your tires every other oil change (every 6,000 miles) to prevent uneven wear.

3. Throw away that cheap $2 gauge and buy a digital tire gauge for $10-$15! Check the tire pressure using the pressure off the sticker on the driver’s door frame, not the tire itself. Check your tire pressure ONCE a month.

4. If possible, do your 15,000 mile services at a dealership (if a person can’t afford those major services about once a year, they are buying too much vehicle). The dealership will have the latest technical service bulletins, recalls, or other specialized info and tools that the local guys or even national chains may not have.

5. Replace the air filter every six months. This is easy to check yourself; just look in the owner’s manual for how to pop the cover off. Laurens says a dirty filter “is like trying to breathe through a dirty rag while running hard!” It is the lungs of your car. If the used car has a dirty filter then it may not have been maintained well!

6. Read the owners manual! “This is the book in your glove box under all the napkins and ketchup packs.” Lauren admits it’s not a great novel, but there is a lot of very useful information in there. Remember: they wouldn’t pay for it to be printed if it didn’t matter.

7. Remember to change the Inverter Coolant! For many hybrids this should be done during the 30,000 mile service, so when purchasing a used hybrid, be sure to ask for all receipts!

The car I replaced it with was a much smaller Volvo with the same five-cylinder engine. I was led to believe it would get 30 mpg, but it only only averaged 23.5 mpg over the mountainous roads I drive. So, recently, with a little time on my hands I drove a couple of hybrids. The Honda Civic was disappointing and handicapped by the fact that the batteries needed for a hybrid obstruct cargo space. It was slow and sluggish, this from a previous Honda owner.

The Toyota Prius I found was actually quite surprising, and if I could get over the jelly bean look of the little car that could, I would have to go for that awesome 45-48 mpg promise. It was also very satisfying to watch the computer screen tell me if I was using electric or motor power. It validated my need to do something about this petroleum holocaust.

Then there is diesel. Volkswagen has an ’08 Jetta, not yet available in my area, that promises to get as much as 50 mpg. From what I have read, they are utilizing new technology now used in Mercedes as well, that reburns the particulates. Performance is up and the clean/green factor is up. Very interesting, but they didn’t have anything for me to test drive and I seemed to know more about the technology than the dealership did. Combined with the fact that diesel fuel is skyrocketing, I had an uneasy feel for going there.

This morning’s news talked about sales being down for American car manufacturers. They reported a 4 percent increase for Toyata. Imagine that. The car dealership I first went to only had one Prius to test drive, no hybrid SUVs and no hybrid Camrys on the lot. They said they would sell most of them before you could test drive them. Now who would buy a car without test driving it? Desperate Americans that’s who. You know in most areas of technology, it’s there before we are ready for it, with cars, the environment has been, perhaps unalterably destroyed, due to some very powerful people holding back the technology.

Well I found finally found the perfect car for me after several weeks of shopping and research. It’s stylish, roomy and you’d never know it was a hybrid to look at it or to open up when you need to pass a car. You don’t feel like you are driving an experiment, rather a luxurious automobile. It’s a 2009 Toyota Camry.

And boy am I having fun watching those biofeedback displays that are teaching me how to most efficiently drive this car. I have never owned a Toyota until now, and now, I’m very impressed with Toyota’s hybrid edge. Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive© is the most advanced type. Full hybrids run on electric drive at low speeds, on gasoline and electric drive in traffic, and on gasoline alone at highway speeds. Computers automatically control the electric motor and gasoline engine for an optimal balance of responsive performance, fuel economy and lower emissions.

The electric motor adds extra power during peak demands, enabling the use of a smaller, lighter and less polluting engine. The gasoline engine provides most of the power. It recharges the hybrid battery for hundreds of miles of range. The batteries also get energy back from the drivetrain in a process called regenerative braking. So it’s surprising that truck owners have not embraced hybrid technology. Who wouldn’t want phenomenally better gas mileage? But in some ways the reaction is understandable. The most well-known hybrid vehicle, the Toyota Prius, is not known for its power to go up mountains or tow even a small cart much less two tons of rocks. Trucks, to fulfill their duties, need power first.

But ‘hybrid’ means merger and in this case, a gasoline engine and battery pack with the latter either supplementing or replacing the former depending on driving conditions. This combination can be tuned to emphasize power or fuel economy, many times providing both. The six-cylinder hybrid Honda Accord, for example, gets an additional fifteen ponies compared to its non-hybrid version while providing gas mileage like its four-cylinder Civic siblings. GM’s first full-sized hybrid trucks, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, are estimated to get an additional ten percent increase in their mileage. While this may not sound like much, it adds ‘high mileage’ to the pair’s already impressive list of features. But most importantly, neither truck suffers lost of torque for speed, hauling or pulling power with the hybrid powertrain.

The batteries provide other advantages as well. The Silverado and Sierra can use their hybrid batteries to power equipment when on site, for example. Reviewers of the trucks for Automobile magazine found the feature heaven-sent when their computer equipment ran out of juice out in the middle of nowhere. Why haul miniature power plants or extra batteries when you drive one?

Finally, some of the most powerful and popular trucks have diesel option which is not allowed in many states due to environmental concerns. Hybrids were developed to be environmentally friendly and hybrid pickups could be used in lieu of their diesel brethren in such states.

Hybrids offer far more than just being friendly to one’s environment or better gas mileage. Truck owners, already driving one of the most versatile vehicles around, would have all those advantages magnified by a hybrid powertrain.

If you have an old Honda Civic, you can convert it to an EV at your home garage. Even if you do not have one, it does cost a lot to buy a used Civic. The idea of the electric car retrofitting is to take out the internal combustion engine and replace it with an electric motor. The motor is connected to the existing transmission unit. A year ago, I would have laughed with you at the idea of a lean, cherry-red, Italian supercar with a hybrid power unit.

The Ferrari 559 is a radical departure for the company, but not for the hybrid unit alone – the car came not with the signature red paint job, but appreciatively green!

Obviously, this is not last year – it is 2010 and Ferrari is only one of a number of major car manufacturers announcing and unveiling hybrid models.

English car research and bespoke engineering company, Lotus has supplied a number of hybrid power unit “plug-ins” for Malaysian car manufacturer, Proton.

Hybrids have been the domain of the Japanese for the last five years, but the American car giants have been catching up (especially with the Congressional strings attached to bail-out funding and Presidential demands for cleaner and fuel-efficient cars). Now the Europeans are getting in on the act, and several manufacturers will undoubtedly be taking a share in the US market.

The Volkswagen Passat, diesel powered, has been voted the greenest car in the US for 2009, but it is not a hybrid. VW are addressing this glaring omission in their line-up with the introduction of the 2011 Toureg, an SUV which has shed over 460 pounds and has an added gas/electric unit. Though the Toureg comes in lighter than previous models, it has managed to retain its dimensions, so it is not in fact a smaller vehicle (just lighter).

Porsche have also launched the hybrid version of the Cayenne which shares the same platform as the Toureg (VW owns Porsche which is run as an independent unit), and the same hybrid unti will power the 2011 hybrid model too. It should come as no surprise that Audi are also getting in on the act – Audi is, of course, also owned by VW – and the same power unit is seen in the Audi S4.

Staying with VW a moment longer, Audi has launched the A8 Hybrid as its first major entry into the hybrid market. One difference from Audi’s approach compared to the rest of the market is that Audi have focused on enhancing fuel efficiency from the petrol unit and not the electric one. Thanks to this, it is not the greenest car you can buy, but then again it is not a “small” car which seems to have been eschewed by the major European car makers. They are all competing for the high-end car buyer who wants green credentials but no sacrifice in performance and luxury.

BMW is also introducing a new 5-series range this year, but what really caught everyone’s attention was not the new range but the 5-series Concept under BMW’s ActiveHybrid brand. BMW has dabbled with hybrid concepts before, but the 5-series is the company’s flagship range (closely allied with the 3-series). The 5-series range is probably BMW’s best bet for entering the US hybrid market, and this is what has grabbed observers attention more than anything else, though the 7-series has already been put into production.

Hybrid and Electric Cars

The Tesla Roadster, a sports car powered by electricity that can reach 60 miles per hour in 3.9 seconds.

The Falcon 1 and Falcon 9 rockets and Dragon series launch vehicles developed by space tourism company SpaceX to propel everyday humans and cargo into low Earth orbit.

The Segway PT, an electric, self-balancing and weight-steering apparatus that allows the user to be mobile on sidewalks at speeds up to 12 miles per hour. (A two-seat/two-wheeled prototype called the PUMA, also created by Segway will be featured in a later article.)

Of course, these are just a small sample of how far we have come in terms of human transportation. With the advancements in computers, robotics, engineering, fuels, forms of power and so on, the world really is our oyster in terms of what we can create. As we start shifting toward a world that is not as reliant on oil as a fuel source, we must give these alternatives a chance to succeed.

Today, most Americans use personal automobiles, light rail and buses as convenient forms of inner-city travel which explains why this is where most of the development is located. Often forgotten are those of us who still walk from place to place on occasion and those of us who ride a bike from point A to point B. They should not be left out of this discussion.

The Segway was really the first of its kind. A personal transporter that could carry a person long distances in a timely manner without the use of roads and devoid of much exertion, but, it has not moved beyond small markets in the general public. However, the folks at Segway have quietly been selling more and more units over the past few years and the answer is really simple. People are, quietly (because who wants to be seen on a Segway!), coming around to the idea that these just might make sense.

So, what if a major corporation that (gasp!) designs and creates automobiles as its major source of business also started to realize that this form of transportation might actually work? Well, they have, and that company is based in Japan.

It is called Toyota.

You may have heard of it.

I want to bring to your attention, Toyota’s new prototype, the i-REAL. First introduced in 2007 at the Tokyo Auto Show and featured on the television program Top Gear, it is understandable that you may have heard something about it already. However, I believe that the i-REAL is a good example of a few different things.

Development of real vehicular alternatives by a major vehicular corporation.

Potential for competition in the personal transportation market which has been lacking since the release of the Segway.

Thirdly, the unthinkable becoming a reality.

The i-REAL is similar in concept to the Segway but that’s where all similarities end. While the Segway employs two wheels, the i-REAL moves on three, two in the front and one in the rear. Instead of moving based on the shifting of the user’s weight, the i-REAL has nifty controls that are located in the arm rests, allowing you the ability to steer it with one hand.

It also has a high speed mode where the user reclines and the wheel base widens so it can reach speeds up to 18 miles per hour with high performance maneuverability. Perimeter monitoring on-board sensors alert you to the presence of any dangers that might be in your way with vibration and an alarm.

Like the Segway, it runs on electricity, so that means, fast travel, with zero emissions.

Lastly, and maybe most important, it will be able to give the disabled more freedom. Obviously, it is going to be much too expensive to replace the average wheelchair, but it is a start.

Of course, the i-REAL will be met with skepticism, uncertainty and maybe even laughter if it indeed makes it past development hell. But it is definitely worth looking into if you value your time, your environment and the world around you.

I’m not saying everyone is going to own one of these. I’ m not saying go out and buy a Segway or a Tesla Roadster. Not everyone is going to be able to fly on an experimental spacecraft into low earth orbit.

What I am saying is be open minded.

I am saying dream.

Because you never know, maybe one day we will all be riding around on something that may have seemed silly at first glance.
