1. Keep your vehicle maintained

Surprisingly enough, statistically the nation as a whole does not do proper preventative maintenance on their cars. Did you know that if your oil is dirty, you are getting less fuel economy? If you don’t want to change your oil so often, there are many new oils out now that last for five, ten, even twelve thousand miles before you need to change it. It may cost a dollar or two more per quart but in the long run, you save money.

Also, most Americans don’t tune their automobiles up as scheduled. I conducted a private study for one of the companies that I used to work and contacted over 1000 auto dealerships and independent auto shops throughout the United States and Canada. I spoke to the service managers in all of these shops and the answers were the same everywhere I called.

Most people simply refused to have their auto’s tuned up on schedule. The customer would have the auto repair that they were there for and simply nothing else done.

Did you know that a cold firing plug can reduce your fuel economy up to 8 gallons per mile? The manufacturer of your automobile placed a schedule of when the auto should have the plugs changed. For most vehicles, it ranges from 12,000 to 30,000 miles. You should have the plugs and wires changed on schedule. If you would like to get plugs that last longer, consider a good set of platinum plugs. You can get Bosch platinum+2 for only a dollar or two more per plug and platinum+4 for a few dollars more per plug.

Change your timing belt on schedule.

It is most important that you change your timing belt as scheduled. There are a couple of reasons for this. Number one, as the belt wears out, your fuel economy gets worse. The second reason is because if your car is a V6 or V8 with duel overhead cams (DOHC stamped on engine), if it breaks, you are going to have very costly repairs in the long run. 9 out of 10 engines that the timing belt breaks in with DOHC bends valves. This causes you to have to rebuild the heads or replace the heads at a very high price.

Change your air filter on schedule.

This is again crucial to the fuel efficiency of your automobile. Just like us, your engine has to breathe. Without a clean air filter, you will burn a lot more fuel because you don’t have the proper air/fuel mixture. It is usually recommended to change them every time you change your oil, however, you may consider purchasing a K&N filter or one from one of their competitors that doesn’t have to be changed but merely cleaned. This will save you a lot of money over the lifetime of your car, plus if it needs to be cleaned, you merely blow it out with compressed air.

Make sure you have your PCV valve changed on schedule.

For even some of the best people who take care of their cars, this is a critical step that is often overlooked. The PCV valve doesn’t cost but a dollar or two and usually last as long as your plugs do.

Do an upper-end cleaning on your engine.

This is where you have your intake and valves cleaned. A few years ago, the intake and valve covers had to come off the vehicle to do this. Now, you can buy the chemical at the auto parts store yourself and clean the intake in about 15 minutes. The chemicals have the directions for how to do it, but believe me anybody can do it, and you don’t have to spend up to $600 for a shop to do it for you. It will instead cost you about $8.

Make sure that your tires are in good shape and aired at your vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure.

The tire may say that you can inflate to 50 p.s.i., however, that is maximum pressure for the tire. If you look inside the driver’s door at the inspection tag from the factory, you will find the manufacturer’s recommended tire pressure. It is recommended because they have performed many tests to find where the car performs best at and found that the best performance comes from this setting.

Have your transmission flushed about every 30,000 miles.

This keeps the vehicle shifting properly and also allows you to get better fuel efficiency. A standard flush doesn’t cost very much and can make your transmission last up to three times as long as it normally would.

Last of all, make sure that you change your belt as scheduled.

As the belt gets older and wears, a certain amount of slippage occurs, ultimately making you have to run the engine harder. It is also a good idea to keep it changed on schedule because of the unfortunate event that it breaks, you lose your power steering, a/c, and alternator.

2. Consider doing a few modifications to your automobile.

There are a few mods that you can do to you auto that will save quite a few dollars at the pump.

The first thing that you can do is replace your muffler with a performance muffler. Yes, they are louder but they also let a lot more exhaust flow through. This ultimately means you pick up horsepower and also fuel efficiency.

Case study: 1995 Chevrolet K-1500. Replaced factory exhaust with Dynomax dual outlet muffler and actually picked up 28 horsepower on the dyno and almost 2.3 miles to the gallon of fuel.

The second modification that you can do is change your air intake system and put a cold-air intake on it. This is going to cost anywhere from $200-$500 for the do-it-yourselfers and $400-$1000 to have it done at a shop. It does increase horsepower and fuel efficiency, but in the long run, isn’t really worth the money unless you just want it.

The last modification that you could do is put a hydrogen fuel cell on your car. You can actually Google this, there was a case study performed and the video is on YouTube of a guy with a Saturn. He was getting 37 miles to the gallon at baseline. He installed the cell on his car and actually got over 62 miles to the gallon. That is an incredible increase in fuel efficiency.

You can search around to find where to purchase them and have them installed. They run around $1500, to the best of my knowledge and aren’t hard to install. All in all, for under $2000, you can have it put on your car and in the first year save at least that much on fuel.

Over the past few years the gas prices have been rising but there did not seem to be a real need to use an alternative fuel car. I admit to complaining about the prices, but I did not start scrambling for ways to increase gas mileage or think I needed an alternative to gas car. When gas prices hit $4.00 a gallon the scrambling time arrived. Now, I’m not an economist but with the state of the economy I have to dig deep (pun intended) for a cheaper way to fuel my car. I make a modest living have a wife, two kids and drive roughly 40 miles round trip to my office.

I would love to ride a bike to work or walk but like I mentioned, it’s 40 miles. Public transportation would save money but the inconvenience of having to re-schedule my day for the stops that are made are not good since my work schedule can change on a whim. Buying a new hybrid car is not in the current budget. So that brings me to my newest discovery. Convert my car to a hybrid and use a water powered engine. Initially I laughed when my mechanic told me about this ‘water car’ concept.

To my surprise I found there have been many inventions in the past that explain how to use water as fuel can run your car. Water for fuel, I asked him? How can you run your car on water? He explained the following: “There’s a way to use electricity from the battery to split the water molecule and create a gas called Brown’s Gas. Another name for this reaction is called hydroxyl. He showed me a do-it-yourself guide that was about 90 pages and told me the materials needed cost about the price for a tank of gas. The diagrams and instructions seemed easy enough to follow but I would never hear the end of it from my wife if I messed up the car engine. I The conversion is 100% reversible if for some reason you need to switch back.

If this works then it would pay for itself in a month or so and the savings would continue for as long as the gas crisis. Some of the benefits I’ve heard are that you can increase gas mileage, increase your car’s fuel efficiency which of course saves you money at the gas station. The other great part about converting your engine is the government can’t put any extra tax on you for running your car on water. So there’s another way to save. If we don’t find ways to get better mpg the cost of everything will go up. Alternative fuel sources will have to be considered by everyone that’s concerned with a struggling economy.

There are several other measures you can take to reduce your fuel consumption. When driving, anticipate as far as possible. For example, if you are approaching traffic signals and they are red, there is no point in reaching them too soon if there is a chance they might turn green (and assuming you are not in heavy traffic where you might create and obstruction to cars behind you). Depending on the characteristic and length of an alternative, a longer, flatter route might be less expensive. Finally, many drivers have access to covered storage (garage, sheds, etc) – use it if you have one. When the temperature drops below 15 Celcius/59 Farhenheit as you start your car from cold, it is extremely likely that you engine will use considerable fuel to get the temperature to operating conditions, and to power systems such as heat or air conditioning. Keeping your vehicle free from exposed cold conditions will save you a lot of money.

In recent years, oil prices have skyrocketed and become relatively unstable.  This has led auto manufacturers to develop hybrid gas-electric systems that have become extremely popular in the United States and abroad.  Some innovative automakers are taking this idea a step further, researching zero emission clean fuel technologies such as hydrogen fuel cells.  Fuel cell vehicles combine high-pressure hydrogen gas with oxygen from the air in a chemical process that produces electricity.  The electricity is then stored in the fuel cells and is used to power an electric motor.  Only water and heat are emitted during this process and no harmful chemicals are released into the atmosphere.  Due to its efficiency and cleanliness, hydrogen fuel cell technology has been heralded as the answer for zero-emission transportation.

While this may seem like a futuristic concept, Honda Motor Company is close to making it a reality with the limited release of the FCX Clarity in regions of southern California.  Approximately 200 of these cars will be leased to consumers for three year terms at $600 per month, which includes all maintenance for the vehicle.  Southern California was the ideal location for Honda’s test run of the FCX Clarity because the hydrogen fueling station infrastructure is already in place.  The vehicle is expected to travel approximately 240 miles on one tank of hydrogen fuel.  Initial studies have shown that the vehicle experiences much less wear and tear than the standard internal combustion gasoline engine.  This will result in both low fuel and maintenance costs for consumers.

Unfortunately, neither the American nor international auto markets are prepared to embrace and support this clean technology.  In order to make hydrogen fuel cell technology viable worldwide, further development of cost-effective parts, manufacturing processes, and fueling stations is required.  The cost of materials and production of the fuel cells required to power the vehicles raises the retail price to a point that is out of reach for a majority of consumers.  Also, public refueling stations are absurdly expensive to produce and maintain.  Many of the current locations throughout California are maintained by educational or governmental organizations.  Honda is currently working to develop a home fueling station that utilizes natural gas to create hydrogen right in the owner’s garage.

It is critical for this and other zero-emission technologies to become viable in the very near future in order to preserve our automobile culture.

Diesel is now 25% to 35% more fuel efficient than gasoline. With the advent of biodiesel this ration may run well over 40%. The current diesel price is around $2.80 per gallon which would cost the owner of this truck around $56 to fill up the tank. Not only does a diesel owner save about 7 dollars per tank but they are able to drive an additional 133 miles.

Of all the cars in Europe nearly 50% have diesel engines while only 1% of all U.S. cars are diesel. This means there is much more room to grow the diesel market in this country. We love automobiles and depend upon them in countless avenues, from industry to family transport to leisure time; however, the economic impact skyrocketing gas prices have had upon our wallets may just be that step backward for civilization. The American Automobile Association recently forecast that the number of 2008 Memorial Day holiday car travelers would decrease by nearly 360,000 over the previous year’s totals. This is widely attributed to the rising cost of gasoline.

Yet our love/hate affair with cars, trucks, RVs and motorcycles continues. This is in spite of how gasoline prices seem to reach new record highs each day. For those of us who need to squeeze as many MPGs as possible out of our vehicles, included here are 10 tips for maximizing gas mileage.

Make Maintenance a Priority -

1) Use Vehicle’s Recommended Grade Motor Oil. Most newer passenger car and light truck engines require 5W-30 oil for multi-purpose driving. This lighter weight oil provides friction-reducing protection that helps engines run more efficiently, which equates to increased gas mileage. Older engines generally function better with 10W-30 or 10W-40. However, you should always consult your owner’s manual or dealer to see what grade of oil your engine is designed for. If you use 10W-30 in an engine designed for 5W-30, you may actually lower your MPG. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, using the proper weight of oil (as well as synthetic blends when possible) can increase MPG by one to two percent or more, or at least $.04 to $.08 per gallon of gas.

2) Keep Your Tires Properly Inflated. Tires that are properly inflated are safer and last longer. You can improve mileage by around 3.3 percent by maintaining proper tire pressure. That translates to roughly $.12 per gallon. Depending upon your tire size and maximum vehicle load, proper inflation can be anywhere from 32 to 60 PSI on average. Keep in mind that for every 1 PSI drop in tire pressure, your mileage decreases by .4 percent. Due to its more consistent rate of expansion and contraction, some sources advocate filling your tires with nitrogen rather than air, as race car drivers do. The overall benefit for the average driver is currently under debate, but in theory, the consistent expansion and contraction rate of nitrogen keeps tires in proper contact with the road, increasing traction and hence mileage.

3) Check and Replace Air Filters Regularly. Keep dust and dirt from clogging up your engine’s cylinders with a fresh air filter. This enables them to function at greater efficiency, which increases both engine horsepower and MPG. Replacing a clogged filter can improve gas mileage by a whopping 10 percent – up to a $.41 per gallon savings.

4) Get a Tune Up. If your vehicle is out of tune or has failed an emissions test recently, improve your mileage by four percent with a standard tuning. For more serious problems like a faulty oxygen sensor, repairs can improve MPG by as much 40 percent.

5) Use the Fuel Octane Needed. Octane rating determines how fast fuel burns in an internal combustion engine. The higher the octane, the longer fuel takes to burn. A slow burn is generally more efficient than a quick burn, so on the surface it would appear that high octane fuel is the way to go. However, 92 octane is typically as much as $.20 per gallon more expensive than standard 87 octane, and the benefit from higher octane doesn’t offset the increased cost.

Go Green: Go High-Tech -

6) Try a Hybrid. Hybrid electric vehicles are all the rage in our increasingly green-conscious society. Not only do they decrease harmful emissions and reduce wear on engines, but the fuel economizing features of hybrid engines enable them to achieve 20 to 30 additional miles per gallon. There are also tax incentives to making the switch.

7) Don’t Fall for Gas-Saving Gadgets. OK, change in list format on this one. According to Popular Mechanics, not only do gimmicks like copper tubing, magnets and other gadgets and non-conventional fuel additives show little or no improvement to your MPG, but most seem to hurt fuel economy and horsepower.

Drive Well -

Ever Hear of Hypermilling and Ecodriving? These driving techniques are both centered around some basic ideas. For instance, coast into red light stops. Accelerate slowly and smoothly. On the highway, set up cruise control at the speed limit or slightly below. Seek fuel efficiency in a new car, rather than horsepower. Draft behind larger vehicles for the aerodynamic benefits – just like a NASCAR driver, but at much safer speed. Avoid excessive idling. Use overdrive gears . Let off the gas and save your brakes whenever possible. Not only will these techniques improve your MPG by 30 percent or more, but you’ll be much more relaxed once you get the hang of it.

9) Plan and Combine Your Trips. Save fuel and reduce wear and tear on your car by doing such things as staggering your work hours to avoid peak commuting times, telecommuting if you can, and using carpools and public transportation. When running errands, try to get multiple jobs done on one trip. Several short trips from a cold start can use twice as much fuel as one longer trip, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

10) Lose Weight. No, I don’t necessarily mean you, but every little bit helps. An extra 100 pounds in your vehicle can reduce MPG by up to two percent, or $.04 to $.08 per gallon of gas. So don’t carry around that jet ski, trailer or quarter-ton of garden bricks if you aren’t planning to use them on that trip.

With these tips in your arsenal, you can make the best of your car’s gas mileage and driving life, help save the environment and ease that pain in the pocketbook. Once alternative fuels become more readily available for consumer use, do the right thing and make the change at the first opportunity. It will be a step forward for civilization.

There are virtually no leftover byproducts and less pollution is made during the manufacturing process.

The physical properties of Biodiesel are so similar to that of standard diesel fuel that all machinery in use now that is used to handle the distribution of diesel fuel could be used in the distribution of Biodiesel. From the fuel tankers that haul it down the freeway to the gas station’s underground tanks and above ground fuel pumps, Biodiesel needs no special equipment that is not already in use.

So, now we have grown the raw materials, manufactured the Biodiesel, and delivered it to the fuel stations, all that’s left is finding the consumers. Biodiesel can be used in most standard diesel fuel engines with little to no adjustment made to the engine itself. Wherever there is a standard diesel fuel burning automobile, there is a potential end user for Biodiesel.

Biodiesel is ready now to be manufactured, delivered, and used as an alternative to petroleum based fuels. When thinking of the possibilities of Biodiesel, we no longer have to think of “one day”, we can just think of “today”.
