In the world of marketing, there are certain words that are often used to condition the consumer into thinking that a deal is better than it really is. Words like “improved”, “guaranteed” and “BLAH” are used with great frequency. But in the world of automobiles, the buzzword of choice is “certified”, as in a certified auto warranty. This sounds mighty impressive, and many people will assume that being “certified” makes a warranty better. But does it? What is the difference between a “certified” warranty and a regular one?

The main difference between the two types of auto warranties is the original condition in which you purchase the car. When you purchase a new car, you are provided with a standard manufacturer’s original warranty as part of the purchase. This is a standard procedure throughout the industry. This warranty will cover you and protect your car for the first few years or several thousand miles of its life against parts failures. After that warranty expires, you can choose to purchase an extended warranty from a third party company. These warranties protect you against the ever-increasing possibility of a part failure due to the age of your vehicle. Both of these types of warranties are standard practice, and have been around for many years.

More recently, companies that sell used cars have tried to rebrand the image of their product. Rather than being seen as castoff goods, they have begun to speak of their product as “preowned” instead of “used”. Part of this rebranding effort was to begin offering more of the guarantees that come with new car ownership to those who purchased pre-owned vehicles. Thus was born the “certified” label for pre-owned cars. These are vehicles that, despite being second-hand, have been given a thorough going-over by the seller. They have been inspected, cleaned and brought back as close to original manufacturer’s specifications as possible. As a result, these sellers can offer a form of warranty with these cars, as a way of guaranteeing that the pre-owned auto that a customer selects will not be the shady deal that some had come to expect from a used car purchase. A certified auto warranty is the seller’s way of showing that they have put the work into this vehicle to make it as reliable as possible – almost as good as new. And should anything go wrong, you would be just as covered as though you were driving a newer vehicle purchased from a dealership.
