One of the first concepts to understand is that car dealers can make most of their profit from the “back-end” of the car deal. If you buy a car and choose to finance or lease the vehicle, the dealer will make some hidden “back-end” profit. The “back-end” is profit that is made from the “buy-rate” or a lease’s “money-factor”.

What is the “buy-rate”? When a car dealer provides you with financing or leasing options they are actually “buying” the loan or lease from the bank at a cheaper interest-rate. Out of the thousands of car deals that I have made as a car salesman, I have never been asked to negotiate the “buy-rate”. This allowed me to sell cars at a cheaper price (and make the customer feel good) while making thousands hidden in the “back-end”.

The second concept to embrace when buying a car is that most salespeople would like their customers to behave as though they are “tough” negotiators. For example when customers say, “I will leave if you don’t sell it for my price.” Salesman are trained to on a daily basis to keep the customer going “back and forth” and eventually walk them out to their car and then say “OK, please don’t leave…just because we need to sell a car today you got a deal!” In the car business this is called “play-house-90″. As a car salesman, I knew that appealing to the customer’s ego and getting them to feel like they are making a good deal was the most of the battle. To save time, you must be prepared with the true “front-end” and “back-end” costs before you buy a car-but most importantly you must know how car salesman are trained and what is going to happen next.

The Five Steps to Buying a Car and Saving a Ton of Money.

Step One. Car Buying Preparation. – You must find the estimated price of the vehicle you intend to buy. You can do this online though websites like carsdirect.com or edmunds.com. You must also estimate your trade-in’s value (which can be accomplished online though KBB.com) and lock-in financing that can be used as an alternative to the dealers. Most importantly, you must learn the process that car dealers require their salespeople to perform, so you will know exactly what is going to happen when you set foot in the dealership.

Step Two. The First Car Dealer Visit.- Do not buy a car on this visit.. This first dealer visit is to accomplish three things only: 1. Test drive the vehicle – you must drive the car you intend to buy. 2. Obtain the dealer’s ACV (Actual Cash Value) for your trade-in. 3. Learn the dealer’s financing or leasing “buy-rate”. Obviously, the dealer will try to sell you a car on this visit. You will have to know all their techniques before they try to use them and begin to waste your time.

Step Three. Car Deal Calculations. – At home or somewhere other than the car dealership, you must then calculate the net “front-end” and ” back-end” cost on the vehicle and print an accurate payment checker to use during the negotiation. Otherwise the dealer will build a “leg” into the payment and potentially increase their “back-end” profit.

Step Four. Closing the Car Deal. You must negotiate within the dealer’s system and neutralize all of the potential games and gimmicks. If you know what they are going to do before they do it you will be at a huge advantage. Car Dealer‘s will use a “write-up” process that will maximize their profit, you must know this system and psychology behind it. Plus, you must be able to negotiate from a position of strength and be able to verify the dealers counter-offers with accurate information and payment checkers.

Step Five. The Finance Office. Also called “F&I” – Just because you made it through the close doesn’t mean the dealership is finished trying to sell you things. You must know the relative values of the extended warranties, mop-and-glow and other add-ons before you complete the deal. Don’t rely on your wits when buying a car. It’s the car dealer’s profession to increase their profit on every vehicle that that sell. You may feel like you are getting a great deal, but you may over-pay if you don’t follow the above steps and prepare yourself with the proper tools and information.

After all is said and done, it really comes down to personality and goals when deciding between new and used cars. The 20/20 rule applies – 20 percent of people will never buy new, while 20% of people will never buy used. For the other 60%, this article is for you.

Between huge dealer inventories, the option of dealers trading and bringing in a vehicle from another dealership, and custom ordering becoming more popular, the selection factor goes hands down to new cars.

For popular vehicles, it is definitely possible to find a used car. The internet makes it simple for someone to search around the corner or across the country for that perfect used car. Still, it’s nothing compared the options available with new.

Price Matters

There is also the option of extending the term on a used car purchase to the length of a new car. Vehicles last longer. There are loan companies that will extend a note to 6 or more years on a 3 year old vehicle because they expect it to still be running after that amount of time. In those cases, the payments can be much cheaper than on a new car.

Peace of Mind

Going back to the new car smell, the new car knowledge is very appealing. A rough driver who doesn’t do car maintenance and likes to drive 90 mph in their Kia Rio can really hurt a vehicle, even with low miles. When you buy a used car, you take the risk of getting that car and not knowing the bad things it went through for months until it starts having problems prematurely.

Equity

Vehicles are not like homes. They depreciate, regardless of what happens to the market. Some depreciate less than others, but no matter what, every day makes it worth less than the day before.

Used cars have already absorbed the initial depreciation and are closer to leveling out on the depreciation scale. The first 2-4 years of a vehicle’s life result in a loss of up to 75% of its original value. In the first couple of years of a standard 5 year note, it is nearly impossible to trade in a vehicle that was bought new with no money down and not have negative equity.

With used cars, it is still difficult, but not nearly as hard as it is with new cars.

That’s the thing about it. New cars seem like a savvy move when you buy them since for only $349 a month + tax + title + down you can have a great car. I can never quite get the final price of the lease, however, since I can’t add up all those plus signs. They make my calculator’s head hurt. I have to go to the dealer where they have the SuperCalc 5000 leasing computer, which always informs me that my true price will be $100 or $200 higher per month! That’s especially true after I order the Soft Serve ice cream maker option and the Daffodil Lilac scented lambskin covers.

I haven’t bought a new car in almost ten years and my cars still run like new. Ok, I do have a shop full of car experts who take care of them, but the reality is I still have to fix them when they break. But even if you’re paying normal shop rates, I can’t figure out how a new car wins the battle of the financial planning.

Let’s do some simple math. You could go out and buy a 4-year old car and spend say, $15,000. Or you could buy the same car for $30,000+higher taxes+higher insurance. In this example, you’d save at least a delta of about $15,000 or $3,000 for each of the next five years. $3,000 is quite a safety cushion for yearly repair bills. When was the last time you spent that much on your car in a given year? Add on the fact that you can buy an extended warranty and your risk drops even further.

I know, though, the little devil in your ear is still begging you to buy the Cayman – S. Hey, I have my eyes on it to. It looks like a sharp performer and sexy as well. And maybe ladies will finally admire me even as I push my gray hairs out of my eyes as I ask them to repeat their compliments since my hearing isn’t what it used to be. Ok, back to reality.

A good shop can be your best friend if you decide to do the financially prudent thing in buying a pre-owned car. A local shop, owned by families or individuals, will get to know you and your car as it’s serviced (if they’re any good at what they do). That’s a big deal and a huge benefit over places with big shiny buildings that can’t remember your first or last name when you come in. You know the kinds of places I’m talking about where you pay the repair bill and some nice young lady pulls up a microphone and says, “Please bring 10-10-1948-23-3029 to the front, customer waiting”.

In a smaller shop, it’s a lot different. Your car will probably be there parked and ready for you to drive off and the shop manager will simply hand you your keys and thank you for you business -and will probably know both your first and last name. Small shops will also get to know your car’s history so that you can head off problems down the road and service things early before they turn into big problems. And if it’s a truly great shop, the same mechanic will work on your car each time so that there is a working knowledge base in his head about your car – that can be far more effective than just what’s put in the computer database.

Of course, the dealer will not want you to leave and will try to get you to buy right then and there, but it’s usually not best to give in to the pressure. Keep shopping until you have 2-3 cars that are good candidates for purchase, and also can be bought in a fair price range. Now begin the final negotiation process on those three cars letting the dealers know that they must compete with other cars that you could be buying soon. Let the bidding war begin and see who wins.

Once you have your best deal, test drive that car thoroughly to make sure that it will indeed meet your needs and then have an independent mechanic inspect it to be sure of it’s mechanical condition. If a dealer balks at this, just pass them by as there is usually a reason why they don’t want you to know the true condition of that car. Then go to the next best deal on your list and repeat the final inspection process if necessary. Ultimately you will be able to get the car you want at the best price possible, and know that it is a quality vehicle when you buy it.

When dealers can introduce financing and monthly payments into the equation, true sales and trade-in figures get much harder to pin down, so having advance financing can keep the deal simple and save you money.
